I have been just where you are right now and I remember how horrible it was.

I have had my heart broken before. More than once in fact. But the worst break up I ever had was the end of my marriage.

We had been unhappy for years but when my husband announced that he wanted a divorce, I was blindsided. I had so hoped that, after the kids were gone, we would be able to fix our marriage. I thought he was on board too, until, suddenly, he wasn’t.

I moved out of our home to a small house in Boulder, CO. After 18 years of marriage and kids, I was suddenly alone. I knew no one, my kids were at school and I was lost.

The first few months were the worst.  I struggled every day with getting out of bed. I don’t even think I did get out many days. I felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me. Everything that I counted on in my life was gone.

I was depressed. I was angry. I was embarrassed. I was hopeless. I was just about every horrible thing that you could imagine.

More than anything, I felt abandoned. How could my husband have just walked out on me?

My self-esteem was worse than it had ever been and crippling in many ways.

I knew, in my heart, that I would never get through this horrible time and find love and happiness again. I mean, who would want me?

What I remember most is that I didn’t know what to do with myself. The days were long and lonely. I was working, but not enough. My dogs needed walking but that was only an hour a day. I didn’t have the energy to figure out how to spend those empty days so I watched a lot of TV. Which just made me feel worse about everything.

I knew that what I wanted, more than anything, was to get through this pain and self-hatred and move on but I was stuck.

It took me years to get through my divorce. I dated and moved to New York City and dated some more. And, after a time, I got what I had longed for - a successful life coaching business that I had built myself and an amazing man with whom I share I wonderful life.



I had found my happiness and I now wanted to help other people find theirs. But how?


What I often thought about was how I wished I had had some help to get me through my break up. Sure, my friends were helpful but they always told me what I wanted to hear. My therapist was fine but didn’t really help me move forward.

I felt like I was feeling around in the dark, not knowing how to move forward and out of the darkness.
